Why Colorado Skin Ages Faster — and What IPL Does About It

At 6,035 feet, Colorado Springs receives roughly 25 percent more UV radiation than sea level. UV intensity climbs about four percent per thousand feet of elevation. Combine that with more than 240 sunny days a year and dry mountain air, and you get accelerated pigmentation, redness, and photoaging — the exact concerns IPL is built to correct.
The altitude math
Thinner atmosphere filters less ultraviolet radiation. The commonly cited figure is a four to five percent increase in UV intensity per thousand feet of elevation gain. At Colorado Springs elevation, that puts residents meaningfully above what someone in a coastal city absorbs from identical time outdoors.
Snow makes it worse. Fresh snow reflects up to 80 percent of UV back upward, which is why spring skiing produces sunburn in places sunlight does not normally reach — under the chin, inside the nostrils, under the jaw.
What that does to skin over time
Cumulative UV exposure drives most of what people call aging. Specifically:
Pigmentation. Melanocytes overproduce in scattered patches, producing sun spots and uneven tone.
Vascular change. Repeated UV damage weakens capillary walls, producing persistent redness and visible vessels, especially across the cheeks and nose.
Collagen breakdown. UV degrades existing collagen and interferes with production of new collagen, which is what creates crepiness and laxity.
Texture change. The skin surface itself roughens and thickens in chronically exposed areas.
Colorado's low humidity compounds all of it by impairing barrier function, which leaves skin more reactive and slower to recover.
Why sunscreen alone does not reverse it
Sunscreen is the single best thing you can do, and everyone here should be wearing it daily regardless of season. But sunscreen is preventive. It stops the next twenty years of damage. It does nothing about the damage already deposited in your skin.
Reversing existing pigmentation and vascular change requires actively removing it.
What IPL corrects
IPL delivers broad-spectrum light absorbed selectively by melanin and by hemoglobin. Pigmented spots absorb the energy, heat, darken over several days, and flake away. Dilated vessels absorb it, coagulate, and are cleared by the body over one to two weeks.
For the specific damage pattern that Colorado produces — scattered brown pigmentation plus background redness — IPL addresses both in the same session, which is why it fits this region unusually well.
The timing problem
IPL works by targeting pigment. If your skin is currently tanned, the laser cannot reliably distinguish the pigment you want removed from the pigment you just acquired, which raises the risk of burns and uneven results.
This is why fall and winter are the better window for IPL in Colorado. Skin is at its baseline tone, sun exposure afterward is easier to control, and you head into spring with the previous years of damage already cleared. Booking IPL in June is common and is usually the wrong call.
Common questions
How many IPL sessions will I need? Typically three to five spaced several weeks apart, depending on how much accumulated damage there is.
Does it hurt? Most people describe it as a rubber band snap. It is well tolerated without anesthetic.
Will the spots come back? The treated spots are gone. New ones form with new UV exposure, which is why daily sunscreen after treatment is not optional if you want the result to hold.
Can I get IPL if I am tan? You should not. Wait until your tan has fully faded. Any clinic willing to treat you mid-tan is taking a risk with your skin.
Is IPL safe for all skin tones? No. IPL carries real risk on deeper skin tones because it cannot distinguish target pigment from background pigment as reliably. Alternative approaches exist. Ask before booking.
