What happens at a CO2 laser appointment?

Start with a free consult with Laser Joe, then a treatment visit of about 30 minutes. Most redness fades after about 3 days, as seen in one of Laser Joe's clients' day-by-day photos below. Book at least 1 week before a big event; 10+ days is best.

Your appointment, step by step

  • Free consult: Joe checks your skin type, goals, and medications, answers every question, and gives you an exact price.

  • Prep: stop retinol 1 week before, arrive without a sunburn, and tell Joe if you get cold sores.

  • Numbing: pick up your numbing cream in advance and apply it about an hour before your visit.

  • Treatment: about 30 minutes at the studio, with Joe firing the laser the whole time.

  • Aftercare: post-care serum before you leave, then an after-visit call or text from Joe.

What is recovery like for a CO2 laser treatment?

Recovery, day by day

  • Day 0: once the numbing wears off, skin feels like a bad sunburn.

  • Days 1-2: the reddest days. Most people go about normal life with a wide-brimmed hat outdoors.

  • Day 4: most redness has faded.

  • About 1 week: visible smoothing for skin types I-III.

  • 10 days: the safest margin before photos or an event.

How many CO2 sessions will I need, and am I a good candidate?

For lighter skin types (Fitzpatrick I-III), one 20-minute CO2 treatment usually gives dramatic smoothing, visible in about a week. Darker skin types IV-VI get dramatic results over 2-3 gentler sessions, 8 weeks apart, to protect against pigment changes (see below for dark skin CO2 treatment details). Results don't last forever; a yearly CO2 treatment keeps skin at its smoothest. Joe treats all skin types from the lightest to the darkest.

CO2 is not the right treatment if you:

  • Are pregnant

  • Take spironolactone

  • Have a sunburn, or used retinol in the last week

  • Want dramatic lifting: CO2 smooths skin, which results in a tighter look; however, for facelift-like results, well, let's face it, nothing lifts & tightens like an actual surgical facelift.

  • Prone to cold sores? You can still be treated; Joe leaves a larger buffer around the mouth

  • Raised (hypertrophic) scars: some can't be treated, so Joe evaluates them in person

CO2 is safe and effective on dark skin when treated differently than light skin

Many cosmetic industry professionals falsely believe treating darker skin types (Fitzpatrick IV-VI) is too risky and results in hyperpigmentation. It's absolutely true if you treat darker skin types with CO2 THE SAME as lighter skin types then hyperpigmentation is the result. Laser Joe himself is a darker skin type. He understands that when he does a CO2 laser treatment on dark skin he must approach the client's CO2 treatment DIFFERENT than light skin. Darker skin types IV-VI can get the same dramatic smoothing results with CO2 as light skin types, however the results are achieved over 2-3 gentler sessions, 8 weeks apart, to protect against pigment changes. Laser Joe offers darker skin types a unique CO2 package discount. Laser Joe is so confident with CO2 on dark skin that he treats his dark-skinned mother with CO2!

CO2 laser vs. IPL, peels and facelifts: which should I choose?

CO2 laser is the strongest and most effective non-surgical beauty treatment available for resurfacing lines, rough texture, and sun damage in one treatment for most people. IPL is better when the main concern is brown spots or redness without texture. A facelift is the answer for sagging, not CO2.

At a glance, how CO2, IPL, Chemical Peels, and a Surgical Facelift compare:

  • CO2 laser: best for lines, texture, sun damage, and acne scars. 1 session for skin types I-III; 2-3 sessions, 8 weeks apart, for IV-VI. Offered at COR.E.

  • IPL photofacial: best for brown spots, redness, and uneven tone; often a series. Offered at COR.E (full face $499).

  • Chemical peel: dullness and mild texture; results depend on peel depth. Not offered at COR.E. Most aestheticians offer peels.

  • Surgical Facelift: tightens facial sagging and jowls without adding volume to the face. Dermal fillers can also treat facial sagging and jowls, however they do so by adding volume to the face. Laser Joe is always honest during consults with setting expectations, and will tell you if you're really after a facelift and not a CO2.
